Green Sense Concrete

The sheer volume of construction activities has placed significant stress on the construction market especially for the raw materials. This increase in the construction activities have resulted in the depletion of natural resources of virgin materials and emitting huge quantities of greenhouse gases, which, in turn, had huge impact on environmental sustainability. Since concrete dominates infrastructure and building construction, cement and aggregate supply is a big concern.

On the other hand, a vast amount of construction, demolition and excavation wastes, fillers, powders, etc. have been generated during the demolition of concrete structures and other processes. Disposal of these wastes also has a huge impact on the environment.

Because of all these factors, environmental sustainability and economy is becoming an increasingly important part of construction.

The Green Sense Concrete concept is an environmentally-friendly, cost-effective concrete with optimized proportions program in which supplementary cementitious materials, non-cementitious fillers and recycled materials are used with tailor-made chemical admixtures to meet or exceed performance targets.

The positive impact of using Green Sense Concrete concept on sustainability criteria quantified the economic and ecological impact of Green Sense Concrete mixes by certified eco-efficiency analysis report combines a life cycle assessment with life cycle costs.

1-) Green Sense Concrete – Innovation in concrete

By utilizing supplementary cementitious and non-cementitious materials, combined with carefully engineered chemical admixtures, Green Sense Concrete capitalizes on usable by-products typically characterized as waste.

The result is a concrete that has the strength, durability and operational benefits needed to keep customers satisfied, as well as the economic and environmental benefits needed to remain competitive. Green Sense Concrete is a way to lower the ecological impact of concrete without sacrificing performance.

Green Sense Concrete technology with a customized, interactive Eco-Efficiency Analysis program have been developed to measure ecological and economic benefits of concrete and create added value for construction industry. Eco-Efficiency Analysis is a cradle-to-gate examination of Green Sense Concrete beginning with the extraction of raw materials through the production of concrete.

1.1 Introduction to Eco-Efficiency Analysis

Eco-Efficiency Analysis (EEA) is a strategic environmental life-cycle assessment that can be used to ensure sustainable construction practices. Eco-Efficiency Analysis combines a life cycle assessment (LCA) with life cycle costs (LCC).

The environmental and economic impacts associated with the defined customer benefit or functional unit are determined over the whole life cycle.

The EEA compares the relative ecological and economic impacts of concrete mixtures and determines the best performing, most economical concrete mixture with the least environmental impact.

Eco-Efficiency Analysis focuses on the effects of concrete ingredients and mixture proportions on environmental impact categories including, energy consumption, emissions (air, water, and solid waste), toxicity potential, risk potential, consumption of raw materials, and land use.

In addition, Master Builders Solutions also generates the highest valued product specific EPD for our customers which helps customers and projects under LEED requirements to obtain extra points.

2-) Green Sense Concrete Mix Optimization Tool

The Green Sense Concrete mix optimization service begins with selecting the performance targets for a specific application. And then analyzes locally available raw materials, determines the reactivity levels of cement, supplementary cementitious Concrete, fillers and recycled materials technology in Focus materials, and matches their performance to regionally formulated chemical admixtures.

The combination of proprietary, advanced mix optimization software and proportioning expertise results in a customer and application-specific mix design that is economically and ecologically optimized.

3-) Benefits of Green Sense Concrete

Because Green Sense Concrete is optimized for cost, aesthetics, performance and environmental impact, many tangible benefits can be realized by the entire construction team.

Producer:

  • Optimized and economical concrete composition cost

  • Faster truck discharge time - better fleet utilization

  • Desired setting time, slump retention, and strength performance

  • No water needed at jobsite – less performance issues/callbacks due to

  • water addition - reduced claim potential

Contractor:

  • Highly flowable slump concrete

  • Good workability, pumpability and finishing characteristics

  • Faster placement and production

  • Consistent concrete performance

Owner:

  • Desired aesthetics and durability performance

  • Lower shrinkage and cracking potential

  • Contributes towards LEED credits

  •

Environmental Agencies/Community:

  • Less cement used per unit of concrete produced and, therefore, less

  • energy and CO2 emission

  • Less by-product materials targeted for landfill

  • Lower overall environmental impact
